Women and Gender Minorities in Computer Science at Yale, or WG/CS @ Yale for short (formerly known as Float Yale), was founded in 2013 by a group of Yale students who recognized a severe gender gap in the computer science community and wanted to encourage students who might otherwise be daunted by coding to learn and develop technical skills. To that end, WG/CS hosted a successful series of HTML and web development workshops on campus (all student-taught) in its first few years; it was at these events that many Yalies were able to write their very
first computer programs.

Since then, WG/CS has shifted its focus towards broader goals of encouraging students to explore computer science courses, retaining students in the major, and building community.  WG/CS achieves this by organizing study and support groups, hosting free workshops, inviting speakers to campus, arranging lunches with professors, coordinating dinners with women in the industry, sponsoring trips to conferences, liaising with the computer science department and alumni to strengthen the community, and more.

Most importantly, we enable students to build relationships with each other—and what naturally follows is a more welcoming, supportive and inclusive environment for students to succeed.

WG/CS @ Yale celebrates all underrepresented gender minorities, including trans,
gender-nonconforming, and nonbinary individuals.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS TO BECOME A WG/CS MEMBER?

All women and individuals at Yale who identify as a gender minority and are interested in becoming a part of an empowering community while pursuing Computer Science are able to join.

DO I HAVE TO BE A CS MAJOR TO BECOME A MEMBER OR ATTEND WG/CS EVENTS?

No. While the club is catered to best support those involved in Computer Science and who are taking/have taken courses in CS at Yale, there is no expectation for your level of experience in programming. Women and gender minorities interested in CS (or any related major such as Cognitive Science and Computing and the Arts) are welcomed! *Public events hosted by WG/CS are available to anyone in the Yale community.

HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED WITH THE TEAM?

Because WG/CS operates on a semesterly recruitment cycle, members interested in joining the board will have the opportunity to apply at the start of each semester for available positions.

WHY SHOULD I JOIN?

WG/CS provides a wide range of unique events and opportunities for members to gain valuable advice/insights from professors and guest speakers, develop professional skills, and most importantly build meaningful connections with other members at fun social events throughout the year.
